The Rufus Outland Sports Center is dedicated to the man that has mentored many young sports enthusiasts. Without his valuable input, coaching
the Webmaster, this Sports Center would not have been possible. Here are some of the many firsts that Coach Outland accomplished during his career at Frederick Military Academy.

- He was the first FMA Coach; from 1961 through 1978.
- His teams won 24 Tournaments.
- 61 players received college scholarships through sports programs.
- Originated the Post Graduate program at FMA.
- 90% of all "preps" went on to graduate from four-year colleges.
- Several players took coaching positions at various colleges and universities. The most recognized player, now coach, is
Bobby Cremins.

Coach Outland Retires
After a long and illustrious career in sports, Coach Rufus Outland is retiring to enjoy some much needed family time of relaxation. First order of business is to enjoy the gift of an all
expense paid cruise to the destination of their choice which was given as a gift from FMA Alumnus, Lawrence Jenkins at the 2004 school reunion. Janice and Rufus were thrilled by his
generous gift. In an article which appeared in the Virginian Pilot, Lawrence was quoted as crediting Coach Outland and the FMA experience for his being the person that he has become.
- 1958 coached during his senior year in college at Atlantic Christian College
- 1959-61 taught and coached at North Edgecombe High School and won the district tournament (a first for this high school)
- 1961-85 Athletic Director, teacher and coach at Frederick Military Academy. He had 61 players to receive full scholarships where 90% graduated with
degrees. He won 24 tournaments at Frederick.
- 1985-91 Athletic Director, teacher and coach at Portsmouth Catholic High School. He coach the Varsity Girls Team that place second place in TCIS Tournament.
- 1994-05 Teacher and Coach at Norfolk Collegiate School.
Has coached Middle School boys basketball with a record of 100 games and won 80. Has coached girls basketball for two years.
Has coached the Varsity Boys Tennis with a record of 100 matches and won 75.
- Has coached in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament for 12 years winning the tournament for three years and runner up for three years.
Coach Outland has been nominated and selected to the Who's Who Among America's Teachers
on two occasions by student from Collegiate.He has been recommended as a nominee for the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame by the Cadets of Frederick Military Academy.
Coach Outland believes in helping when there is a need. During his teaching and coaching career he has been an anonymous donor for several students.
At Collegiate he has given monthly for eleven years to the Laundon Family. He is active in his church where he serves as a Deacon - Trustee.
Coach Outland states he has enjoyed his career in teaching and coaching and it is rewarding to see your students mature and excel in the working world. The FMA Cadets and all the others that Coach impacted over his career, wish he and Mrs. Coach the best of everything and a rewarding retirement.  1984 Football Team in Action The 80's ushered in new sports
